I'm just wondering, for those out there who are into Doctor Who, do you get ticked off when a new Doctor is brought in, as well? I confess, I didn't care much for Christopher Eccleston (gasp!), but I did get into him at the end, and then I got a little grr-like when David Tennant came on as the 10th Doctor. It took me a while to warm up to him, but then...I came to think of him as a brilliant Doctor and I swore I would stop watching when his character had to regenerate, because he was my favorite (still is, a little). I was soooo peeved with the current Doctor, Matt Smith, at first, because I thought he was a bit of a clown in comparison. But...it wasn't long before I adored him as well. I don't think I can take another regeration. It's like when a favored pet dies and the world is all gloom....but then, someone thrusts a new puppy at you and you know it won't be the same, it couldn't possibly be. But, eventually, you grow to love it just as much as the first one. But, it eventually has to go away, as well. *gloom*
(I'm antsy for the season to start back up later this month...can you tell?!)
Did you have any of the "who is this clown?" type of thoughts with the new doctors as well....and, did you end up liking them anyway, in the end? I don't think it would work with all shows, though, replacing the main character. This one has enough robots, aliens and stuff in it to keep me watching, but it does stink to have a character I'm invested in leave.
(This is like the one show I am nuts over, so, I mean, that's why I bring it up and, well, I...umm...<---listen to me try and make myself sound not so sad and insane. *cries* Who fans get me! Waah! */cries*
*grin*
I grew up with Dr Who through the Pertwee/Baker era. I stopped following the series after Baker because I found the new Doctors disappointing, and also because I was a teenager busy doing all the things teenagers shouldn't be doing.
ReplyDeleteI was dubious when they announced the new series, but the first episode was enough for me to know it was in good hands. I was upset when Eccleston left so quickly and enjoyed the angst he gave to the role. Tennant dethroned Baker as my favourite Doctor and so I was greatly disappointed when his replacement was revealed as "that funny looking guy". Matt Smith quickly grew on me and in my mind is simply superb in the role (so much so I'm not sure who I like better, Tennant or Smith).
I guess after so many changes and being happy with how the casting has been handled in the new series, I have confidence that whoever comes after Matt will be someone that gets my oh so important tick of approval. :-)
It's one of the things I love about it. My sister got me into it as a kid, and I hated changing doctors back then. As I've gotten older it only gets harder. For the longest time Tom Baker was my favorite but David Tennant now holds that place.
ReplyDeleteI do like Matt Smith, but I'm hating the way the show is going. Ever since Davies left the writing has gone down fast. It's become too... Americanized. Plus the fact that it's become the Amy show as opposed to Doctor Who, bugs me. Mind you I'm still watching, cause, hey, it's Doctor Who.
I remember being very, very young and crying because the doctor had died at the end of the series. Patrick Troughton the second doctor became Jon Pertwee, in a manner of speaking.
ReplyDeleteBut I wasn't fooled, this wasn't the real doctor at all! (Then the daleks came on and all was forgiven because I was a sucker for those guys)
PS: I grew up watching these as repeats. I'm not quite that old!
Such good thoughts!
ReplyDeleteAustro, I feel the same...I'm dubious at first, but then I end up loving them.
TS, agreed. Completely. The show has changed since and while I do like Amy and Rory, I feel Amy needs a little bit more of a backseat here lately.
Gyran,
Awww...am visualizing a tyke crying because the Doctor regenerated. *heartstrings officially pulled*.
Absolutely. Every time I go, "This is ridiculous. I hate the new Doctor!" Then, a week later I wonder how I ever watched it without him. I guess Who fans always feel a loyalty to the actor. In the end, The Doctor is always the Doctor. ;)
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the new season. I'm hoping to be able to post reviews of every episode, but we'll see.
