Jesus, My Father, the CIA, and Me, written by Ian Morgan Cron, is a memoir of sorts, and chronicles the life of the author, thus far. With a series of tales woven together to form a moving story with a Christian base, this book has several main focuses. The first, and my favorite to read, are about his relationship with his father who was somehow a part of the CIA and from the tidbits that the author has fed us (the parts that he knows, anyway), the man must have had a fascinating life. Yet still, Cron didn't have the closeness with him that he wished to have had, and he had to wrestle with his emotions over that, and his father's alcoholism, and eventually, work to understand his father.
The second theme focuses on the author's relationship with God, and how he realizes God was there for him throughout his life, even when times were a little more difficult. This is woven in nicely so that it does not detract from the overall memoir, but enhances it instead.
And finally, the story itself about the author's childhood and adult years is very well written (especially his touching stories about his mother), and I found myself entertained, he being such a good story-teller. I wouldn't call this book a "must read" because I found myself laboring over it in a few sections and would put it aside for days....but, I do think it is a nice read, esepcially the sections about his mysterious and intriguing father.

ReplyDeleteMan, that book sounds deep. I'm not sure if I could take it though. I'd be screaming "Daddy, why didn't you love me!" halfway through. He did, but I'd probably get carried away.
