This is the story of Soujon, a tale about finding inner strength, discovering
unique gifts and learning to stand up adversity while overcoming almost any
obstacle.
Discover Sky Mountain and the city of Cyane where the laws encompass four
things:
If harm it does none, do as you will
Be kind in spirit
Be in harmony with your surroundings
Be clean in body, mind and spirit.
Soujon's Journey is a book encouraging belief in yourself and your
convictions despite attempts others to dissuade you. The story is a grand escape
to another world, but you will think about and remember the characters for they
will portray your secret feelings and those of other people you will meet.
--------------
Soujon's Journey, written by first-time author, Marlee Morgan, is a story about a young woman, Soujon, and her difficult journey. She starts out a young maiden with a magical ability to heal people. She lives a clean, simple life with the other Sky Mountain people, and life is great.
She meets a man who tricks her into marrying him, and this man, Tourman, comes from Cyane, a place where vermin and filth seem to be the order of the day. He's not a pleasant sort, and though she tries to make her life the same as it was with the Sky Mountain people, it really is anything but. Now she'll have to face escaping the clutches of this dastardly man, while he tries to accomplish his goal: possess the magic of the Sky Mountain people and make both lands his own.
Written with young adults in mind, this charming story is written in the style of a fairytale, and it's the sort of fantasy that has it all: magic, good versus evil, adventure, and with a touch of romance. I enjoyed reading about Soujon and the people around her, as well as the lands they came from which were as different as night and day. Still, I liked that Soujon could touch them, the people of Cyane, and that many of them found her as dear as I do.
The story had a slow start, and honestly, I wondered what I had gotten myself into. But, I'm glad I read beyond the first few chapters, because this was such a wonderful tale, all of the elements within woven together tightly so that the storyline flowed smoothly. I love the life lessons within (finding inner strength, overcoming obstacles, doing the right thing, etc) and would be happy to recommend Soujon's Journey to readers of YA fantasy/fiction.
