A New Name for Worthless: A Hero is Born

Written and illustrated by Rocky Shepheard, A Hero is Born is a children's storybook featuring a dog named Worthless, and his rescue from his chain by his two friends Otto the Otter, and Sly the Fox. "Worthless" was a name given to him from his owner, the man who chained him up and never showed him any affection. He was miserable on his chain, never knowing what it was like to be able to roam around, or find comfort in shade on a hot day. But, when his friends free him one stormy night, Worthless sets off on a mini adventure that just may lead him to everything he had ever hoped for.

While this story is fictional, it is inspired by a real dog named Worthless (who was renamed Bo once he was rescued) who suffered on the end of a chain for 6 years. The author is very active in Dogs Deserve Better, a non-profit organization who's mission is" freeing Man's Best Friend and bringing him/her into the home and family. The group has freed thousands of dogs from chains and pens, finding them new inside homes and families." And so, this story has a strong "animal rights" tone, but the charming story is told in a kid-friendly way so as not to come off as preachy. It is sure to touch the hearts of children everywhere.

The illustrations are very beautiful, with the animals and scenery appearing life-like and worthy of hanging in the home, but some (such as Otto with a wide grin) have that impish charm that so appeals to me in illustrations for children's stories.

This book would be ideal for both boys and girls. Boys, because of the action within, where they read about Worthless taking a stand; and girls for the endearing moments. Both, for the compassion that the story subconsciously begs of the reader to feel. I would recommend this storybook to all.
