Monster Monday => Smaug the Dragon

Monster Mondays are all about villains, be they in print or on film. The monster of choice this time will be Smaug the Magnificent, found in Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Smaug was one of the last dragons of Middle-Earth who was eventually killed by Bard the Bowman of Esgaroth, thanks to a grapevine tip by Bilbo Baggins about the one teeny scale missing, exposing Smaug's one vulnerable spot. He was like most dragons (though, more like Beowulf's monster) being all reptile-like and essentially a bad mofo, but he was a little tougher than some because his underbelly was as impenetrable as his skin, thanks to all of the gold and jewels from his hoard atop the Lonely Mountain, that had permanently embedded themselves into his flesh.

As far as dragons go, he was a really cool one (though a bit silly looking in the animated version), and if the world's best marksman (apparently!) were not there, he would still probably be out terrorizing dwarves (like every good dragon should).

Have a favorite monster? Do you like Smaug the Magnificent, or The Hobbit?

  1. Definitely Smaug, I always liked the way he toyed with Bilbo even though it was ultimately his undoing.

Least favorite is Pennywise the Clown from Stephen Kings IT. I've only ever been able to watch that movie twice.

Most Favoritist is a tie between Godzilla and Frankenstein.

  2. Eww, Pennywise. I think I was 10 or so when it came out, and I watched the most of it from behind a recliner, peeking out at the TV. LOL. He was too creepy. Good choice!

Frankie is awesome, but I'm gonna have to go with Godzilla here. LOVE him....he's got the whole good-monster/bad-monster thing going on. I mean, he'll stomp on a bunch of people if he has to, but, he will kick a competing monster's behind as well and tends to save the day. I think the funniest is the vs. Sea Monster movie....where he rips that lobster-thing's claw off and they toss a rock back and forth..lol. I watched that a bajillion times as a kid. Yeah....he's definitely a fave of mine, as well.

  3. I would be lying if I didn't say my favorite dragon was Puff, and that's no lie. I will say that I enjoyed the ones from Harry Potter, but that could be because of the animation. I don't know, I just like how they can put a niceness to a "monster" and now I have the song stuck in my head!
